Hey look! A life update that compresses two months into one, and is more than two weeks late! Life events took precedence over reflections on my little corner of the interwebs.
We traveled as a family, visiting family. Spending two months abroad and off work was a refreshing change of pace. But it also was a challenge to navigate our new dynamics as a family. Learn to listen. Learn to have patience. Learn to live off a suit case and hospitality for so long. I definitely cherish this time. It is a rare privilege to be able to do what we did. I’m grateful.
My sister’s wedding came up! Beautiful moments shared!
Played/Read/Watched
The Forever War by Joe Haldeman [Book] - I may write some more detailed notes on the book, but not sure. All in all, it is a great peace of critique on the Vietnam war by a veteran, masquerade with cool science fiction and interesting concepts. The aliens are misunderstood for most of the book. Time dilation and aging plays a significant role in the plot and for our protagonist. A bit too patronizing and sexist at times, but I forgive it as a product of its time. Book gets a thumbs up.
The Once and Future King by T.H. White [Book] - it is a classic for a reason. A reinterpretation of Arthurian Myth (which admittedly has been told and retold many many times). But a clever one at that. The first third of this 660 page tome is great. Merlin is a hoot, and sadly only present on that portion of the book (the rest of the book suffers for it). It is like a training camp on steroids for Wart (young Arthur). The rest of the tome deals with a romance (between Lancelot and Guenever) which frankly I didn’t care about. Many crucial and interesting events are told, not shown (battles and wars, the quest for the Grial, the war against Mordred, etc.).
Warsaw’s Rebuilding [Article] - history from after the WWII decimation of the city, the Uprising. Fascinating and encouraging.
