The Dark Ages of Social media

This article of a blog I follow stirred something in me.

We truly live in the most bizarre of ages: endless streams of information is ready at your fingertips. We have more computational power than we know what to do with.

And yet…

There is so much useful, and personal information hidden behind walled gardens imposed by the megacorporations.

Example 1: Some years ago I went through the deletion of both my facebook and instagram accounts. Yes, I went through the trouble of doing a “checkout” of my data, including posts, pictures, private messages, etc. But that information is and interactions are partially lost. Similarly with twitter, when Musk took over.

Example 2: Some of my free time hobbies include niche table-top roleplaying games and magic the gathering. Basically all useful interaction and information happens on discord. And while it’s useful to stirring conversations and asking questions, it is TERRIBLE in retrieving information. The same questions come up over and over again, because the search function is rubbish (by design).

This point is a reminder to myself to try to be more organized about my digital life.

Store everything remotely interesting on the internet.

Post more on your personal blog, which you have more control over.
